Being that she has been my friend so long, she has seen the different romantic encounters come and go. I happen to be on good speaking terms with almost every guy I've dated in the past. Because there is a relatively intimate bond there I often find myself moving backwards into these relationships possibly because I feel like I already know what I'm going to get. Perhaps it's the adage: better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

She asked why do I keep them around. I never really thought about it til now. Besides the fact that because we dated I have feelings and I care about their well being, the friendship lane is a safe one. Outside of the title and confines of a relationship, dudes are more lax and I get the opportunity to see them, flaws and all. It becomes easier to discern what kind of person dude really is when he is not focused on how it might affect me and our relationship; there is nothing tangible to gain. In a sense, it's backwards, we should probably have taken the time to be friends first, but that's not how it happens for a variety of reasons. Welp, I know I need to move forward but does that mean letting my past go in the same step?

Yay!!

Ok. For real. For a long time I wasn't writing because nothing was going on. Now too much has been going on so I haven't had time to put everything down. Still unemployed officially, but very active in my entrepreneurial ventures. I'm the chief communications officer of Guys and Girls (visit the blog: Guys & Girls) and I am trying to assemble a board of directors for my nonprofit organization. So I've been doing a lot of independent research pertaining to those two. AND I'm still applying to law school. FML. And I'm considering taking on some freelance work with Singersroom.com. I am far from in need of things to do to occupy my unemployment time.

Romantically, I'm chasing the future and running from the past which has me stuck in the middle, and the pain is fatal. (c) Michael Jackson I'll definitely have blog entries as it relates to these situations because it seems so surreal at times.

Ah, yes. Of course my initial reaction was that of extreme pride and a deep sense of YES! Hi5! And I am still proud, I mean who wouldn't be of that kind of accomplishment, but then I calmed down and wondered what the hell he won for.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation but recognized initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the U.S. role in combating climate change.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," said Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee.
Uh, so basically he won before the race was over. I'm not hating, I'm just saying... I think this isn't necessarily a good precedent for the Nobel Committee to set. If you look at some of the other candidates, I mean it's hard to see how some of them could NOT get some sort of international recognition. To go from awarding accomplishments to encouraging them is going to be a shift for the committee but dude said he came to change shit, and he sure did. Again, congrats to the president. I don't believe anyone but him could have won in this way.

For Entertainment Purposes Only...

I watched the video of the beating and death of 16 year old Derrion Albert with an array of feelings that ranged from anger and outrage to complete sadness and empathy. Early this summer I lost a friend to a situation where he was fighting, and was struck in the head, too, and died shortly after. I've been following the story in the past few days and been reading comments online and saw this:

Derrion Albert.
The death of Derrion Albert..more fruit from the tree of thug worship.

Jay Z, a professed former crack dealer was on Oprah last week. Snoop Dogg is a cultural icon. Tupac is an iconic figure. Need I mention, 50 Cent, the Game, and the whole plethora of drug dealers, rapists, burglars, and other felons that black America worships.

Young black boys want to be them...
Old black men want to reclaim their youth by sagging by them...
Young black women, educated and non educated, want to F them and have babies by them..
Older black women consider them to be "real men"

Thug worship.

Until black America quits worshipping thugs, this violence will not end.

*blank stare* Um, as far as I know, Jay-z wasn't in any of these boys momma's bed, and therefore it is not his job to raise, nor discipline them. Snoop is not their uncle. Tupac was not involved in their moral and ethical upbringing. I grew up listening to the same artists mentioned, and I have the utmost respect for Jay-z and Tupac and I have never been motivated to pick up a 2X4 and bash anybody's head in. Neither have the other millions of fans and people who listen to the music of rappers and so called "thugs".

I am ANNOYED with the constant blame placed upon entertainers for the responsibilities that need to occur in the household. This person is so upset about what is on television. The solution is simple. Turn it off. Black America has not admired these men because they are bad, but because they have come from bad situations and have been able to beat the odds of the streets and turn their lives into something. Their raps are stories from the hood and what has/is already going on and not a guide for how things should go on. In fact, most kids ALREADY know that rappers don't live the things they rap about. If parents should be worried about "thug" influences, they should worry about the ones in their own neighborhood that the kids have a first hand view of, instead of the ones in Hollywood. Perhaps spend some time with your kids and you won't have to worry about what 50 Cent is talking about. How about you create an environment where your kids can look at you as a hero and not Lil' Wayne? Rappers career field is labeled entertainment for a reason; it's what Webster defines as "amusement or diversion". No where in their job description does it say "appeal to children". And if you want to hold these men accountable because their art is popular, I expect you to hold Denzel Washington and Will Smith accountable for action roles where they kill people. But don't stop there, stop ALL action and horror movies. Why not stop porn from even being made at all? Any fighting video games should disappear. Whatever is offensive, let's just let it all go away. And then what? You know what? Maybe it's a good idea after all. Maybe YOU will be bored enough to actually do something meaningful with your children, like oh, I don't know, help them with homework or take them out and play a sport with them. Something that shows them that their is more to life than the streets.
